More than 20,000 fans mobbed San Francisco’s Embarcadero Center Wednesday to hear a surprise 45-minute mock benefit concert by U2 to “Save the Yuppie.” Singer Bono Hewson said the band had wanted to do a benefit since the Oct. 19 stock market collapse, but it “had to be in a cool city like San Francisco.” Promoter Bill Graham said the band, which has concerts scheduled Saturday and Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum before coming south to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, performed without advance publicity because “we didn’t want people to stay here overnight. We didn’t want people to get in trouble.”
