12 Injured When Bleacher Breaks in Mission Viejo
Twelve spectators suffered minor injuries when a portable bleacher at Capistrano Valley High School’s football stadium in Mission Viejo collapsed about 9:55 p.m. Friday, the Orange County Fire and Sheriff’s departments reported.
The collapse came during the final minutes of Capistrano Valley’s home game against Mission Viejo High School.
Officials said there was no panic after the bleachers accident, and the game, which had attracted an overflow crowd of 7,500, continued.
Lt. Tom Conner, of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said deputies at the scene reported that the back railing of the portable bleacher fell away, and the spectators fell to the ground.
None was seriously hurt, Conner said. “All the injuries were reported to be very minor,” he said.
Leo Schneider, a county Fire Department dispatcher, said paramedics at the scene reported that those injured suffered bruises, sprains and minor cuts. They were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, he said.
Mission Viejo triumphed on the football field by a score of 28-21.
