Defending champion Andy Bean shot a three-under-par 69 Friday for a 200 total and a one-stroke lead over Sandy Lyle after three rounds of the $600,000 Kapalua International golf tournament at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Bean was three shots clear of the field starting the third round, but Lyle, a former British Open champion from Scotland and the 1984 winner of this event, made up two strokes on the last three holes and finished with a 67 and a 201 total.

Lanny Wadkins, who played with Bean and Lyle in the final group, had a 69 for a 203 total, despite a balky putter, and appeared to be the only other challenger in today’s final round.

Val Skinner shot a four-under-par 66 to break a three-way tie and surge into a two-stroke lead in the second round of the $100,000 Worldwide Championship of Pro-Am Golf at Lihue, Hawaii.

Skinner had a 36-hole total of 135 going into today’s final round at the Kiahuna course on Kauai.

Two other first-day leaders failed to keep pace. Cindy Rarick shot a 68 to drop into second place at 137, and Sally Little ballooned to a 73 and was tied for sixth at 142.

Sandra Palmer was third at 138 after shooting a 67 on the second day of the tournament, which has a field of 10 pros and 30 amateurs.

Bobby Nichols shot a five-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead over six players in the opening round of the $200,000 Suntree senior tournament at Melbourne, Fla.

At 68 were J.C. Goosie, Doug Sanders, Dale Douglass, Lee Elder, Bruce Devlin and Dave Hill.

Nichols had six birdies and got his only bogey because of a penalty stroke.

Chi Chi Rodriguez, the No. 1 money-winner on the PGA Seniors Tour, opened with a 70. Al Geiberger, who has won three of the last four senior events, shot a 72.
