San Diego Sports Et cetera : Jackson Leads SDSU Win in Women’s Volleyball : BASKETBALL

Angelica Jackson, a senior playing her last game at Peterson Gym, had 37 kills and 8 blocks to lead the San Diego State women’s volleyball team to a nonconference victory over 19th-ranked Pepperdine Tuesday night. The scores were 15-8, 9-15, 15-9, 15-3.

Pepperdine (17-10) was led by Julie Evans, who had 26 kills.

The Aztecs (14-16) defeated a ranked opponent for the third consecutive match. SDSU beat No. 18 Cal State Long Beach and No. 14 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo earlier.

Junior forward Johnnie Bell scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to an 88-85 victory over Athletes In Action in an exhibition game at Little Rock.

The loss ended AIA’s 12-game winning streak. AIA is based in Rancho Bernardo.

AIA tied the game, 85-85, when Lorenzo Romar hit a three-point shot with 42 seconds remaining. But with three seconds left, Michael Covington got a rebound off a miss by Arkansas-Little Rock’s Freddie Morgan and muscled the ball in for the winning basket.

AIA’s Gib Hinz called a timeout, but his team was charged with a technical foul because it had run out of timeouts. Morgan hit the free throw, giving Arkansas-Little Rock its winning margin.

Arkansas-Little Rock, which trailed by 11 at one point in the first half, trailed by 10 with 4:44 remaining in the game. The Trojans then outscored AIA, 11-0, to take a 81-80 lead with 1:51 left.

Arkansas-Little Rock led at halftime, 44-43.

James Scott had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Arkansas-Little Rock.

Mark Gottfried led AIA with 16 points. He was followed by Tim Dillon with 15 and Wally Rank with 13.

AIA (12-1) will play at Tulsa tonight and Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., Thursday night.
