Local News in Brief : Odd Plan to Build School

Share

After five years of unsuccessfully pushing for a new elementary school, officials of the City of La Verne have come up with an unusual solution.

Using fees from developers, the city wants to build the school itself. “What we’re trying to do is fairly new and innovative,” said City Manager Martin Lomeli. “Schools are usually financed by school districts, not cities.”

The proposal is so unusual that the city plans to sue itself so that a Superior Court judge can determine if the plan is legal. Under one proposal, the city would issue bonds to raise money for the school. The bonds would be repaid by a $5,000 fee assessed on each home built by developers.
