A.O. (Al) Duer, who helped establish the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics and served as its executive secretary for more than 25 years, died on his 83rd birthday.

The NAIA announced in Kansas City that Duer died at Sierra View Hospital in Porterville, Calif., where he had been hospitalized several times. He was suffering from kidney problems.

Duer played football and basketball at Kansas State Teachers’ College in 1923-25 before completing his undergraduate work at Columbia. He earned a master’s degree in physical education at USC.

He coached football and was a principal at several high schools in Kansas before becoming athletic director at Pepperdine in 1939.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita; a daughter, Beth, and a son, Larry.
