NHL Roundup : Islanders Trail, 4-1, Defeat Flyers, 6-4

Mikko Makela and Randy Wood each scored two goals in a five-goal uprising in the third period that enabled the New York Islanders to come from behind and beat the Flyers, 6-4, Saturday night at Philadelphia.

The Flyers were breezing along, 4-1, behind backup goalie Wendell Young when the third period began.

But just 6:26 into the period, the Islanders were even, 4-4. Wood scored, then Makela scored on successive shifts on the ice. Playmaker Bryan Trottier set up two of the goals.

The Islanders, who strengthened their hold on first place in the Patrick Division, scored the game-winner with just 2:14 left when Bob Bassen took a pass from Pat LaFontaine and banged a shot off Young’s pads into the net. Wood completed the scoring into an empty net with two seconds left.

Philadelphia, which completely dominated for two periods, hardly was out of its own end in the last 20 minutes. The Flyers had only two shots on goal in the final period.

The Flyers, who have won only three times in the last 16 games, trail the Islanders by 14 points, the equivalent of seven games. Last season the Flyers breezed to the division title.

Boston 7, Minnesota 5--First-round draft choice Glen Wesley scored his first NHL goal and also had an assist at Bloomington, Minn., to spark the Bruins.

It was the sixth win in a row for Boston and the seventh win in the last eight games.

Wesley, the third player chosen in the draft last spring, is a 19-year-old defenseman, who is beginning to make his presence felt.

Washington 4, Hartford 3--Mike Gartner scored twice and Mike Ridley also had a goal at Hartford as the Capitals outlasted the Whalers.

Gartner and Ridley scored power-play goals just 92 seconds apart in the second period to give Washington a 3-1 lead.

Until the Gartner goal, the Whalers had killed 27 consecutive penalties.

Montreal 2, New Jersey 1--Chris Chelios scored the first goal for the Canadiens at Montreal, then set up Bobby Smith for the winning goal.

Both scores came in the second period and enabled the Canadiens to take the overall point lead in the NHL with 31 points.

The Devils, who have not won in the Forum for nearly four years, scored first on Pat Verbeek’s 16th goal before the game was four minutes old.

St. Louis 4, Vancouver 1--The Blues are in last place in the tight race in the Norris Division, but with this win at St. Louis, are only four points out of first place.

Rookie Tony Hrkac set up three goals in a row as the Blues fought back after giving up the first goal to the Canucks.

Tony McKegney tied the game with his ninth goal and Herb Raglan put them in front midway through the second period. Hrkac assisted on both of them.

Calgary 4, Pittsburgh 4--Mario Lemiuex, held in check by the Edmonton Oilers Friday night, finally broke through in the third period at Calgary.

The Flames led, 4-0, after two periods. But the Penguins pulled to within a goal as Lemieux assisted on two goals. With less than six minutes left, Lemiuex climaxed the rally by scoring his 18th goal of the season.
