Moore, Waived by Spurs Last Week, Has Preliminary Talk With Clippers
The Clippers have contacted veteran guard Johnny Moore, who was waived by the San Antonio Spurs last week. Moore said Coach Gene Shue talked to him Saturday.
“I had a brief conversation with (Clipper Coach) Gene Shue, but nothing was confirmed,” Moore said.
Shue said he talked briefly to General Manager Elgin Baylor about Moore and plans to bring the subject up again.
Said Baylor: “We’re not signing Johnny Moore at this time.”
Moore, a seven-year veteran, was cut by the Spurs after playing in just three games this season.
“I don’t think I fit into their plans,” Moore said of the Spurs. “They’re trying to prepare the team for two years down the road when David Robinson comes in.”
Moore was in the final year of a guaranteed three-year contract which will pay him a reported $400,000 this season. If the Clippers signed Moore, they would only have to pay him the NBA minimum of $75,000, and the Spurs would have to pick up the rest of his salary.
The New York Knicks are also reportedly interested in Moore, who played just 63 games over the last two seasons due to a bout with Desert Fever.
