Challenger Anatoly Karpov called a timeout on Friday to postpone the 18th game of his world chess championship match against titleholder Gary Kasparov.

The 18th game, with Kasparov playing white, is now scheduled for Monday.

Both players have now used two of their three allotted postponements for the course of the 10-week contest, scheduled for 24 games. The series is currently tied at 8 1/2 to 8 1/2 points with three wins and 11 draws to each player.

The crown will go to the first man to win six games or score 12 1/2 points. In the event of a 12-12 deadlock the champion retains the title.
