NCAA Water Polo : UCLA and USC to Meet Tonight in the Semifinals

Two-meter man Jeff Whipple scored five times and goalie Kevin Stringer didn’t allow a goal until the final seconds of the third quarter as USC beat Navy, 17-5, in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. water polo tournament Friday at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.

“Whipple and Stringer are our keys to (winning) the tournament, USC Coach John Williams said.

The No. 2-seeded Trojans (21-7) will play UCLA--a team they defeated three straight times during the regular season--in the semifinals tonight at 7:30.

UCLA defeated Pepperdine, 11-7, as sophomore Alexis Rousseau scored four goals, including two in the fourth period.

Top-seeded California scored an easy 18-3 victory over Brown. Eleven Golden Bears scored, with Luis Ortiz getting three goals.

California will play UC Irvine in tonight’s other semifinal game at 6. Irvine beat Stanford, 8-6, in the quarterfinals.
