Robbie Keen’s 31-yard field goal with 1:13 left today gave the California Golden Bears a 17-17 Pacific 10 Conference tie with Washington State before a crowd of about 45,000.

Until the closing moments, it appeared as if Kevin Adams’ 44-yard field goal early in the third quarter would stand up for a Cougar victory.

The tie left California with a final 3-6-2 record overall and 2-3-2 in the Pac-10. Washington State finished at 3-7-1 and 1-5-1.

The teams ended the first half tied, 14-14, after Cal offset two WSU scoring drives with two big touchdown plays--a 54-yard run by Chris Richards and a 21-yard interception return by John Hardy.

Richards’ run, on a draw play, came after Adams had missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt on the Cougars’ first drive.

A fumble immediately gave the Bears another scoring chance, but Keen missed a field-goal attempt from 44 yards.

WSU then drove 73 yards in 10 plays, aided by a 28-yard pass from Timm Rosenbach to Steve Broussard and a 15-yard personal foul against Cal. Broussard carried the final two yards for the tying touchdown.

Early in the second quarter, an interception by Artie Holmes of a Brad Howe pass gave the Cougars the ball for a 50-yard drive in 10 plays. With his receivers covered, Rosenbach scrambled the last six yards for the score.

But with 1:23 left in the first half, Rosenbach, under pressure deep in his own territory, threw quickly, and Hardy picked it off for the Bears’ tying touchdown.

After the matching field goals made it 17-17, WSU marched to the Cal 40 with 24 seconds left, but Broussard was stopped on a fourth-and-four run. The Bears had time for three plays, and on the last one Cougar James Hasty knocked down Howe’s 54-yard pass in the end zone.
