Chess Game Ends in a Draw; Karpov and Kasparov Tied, 9-9

The 18th game of the world chess championship between Gary Kasparov and challenger Anatoly Karpov was called a draw Monday after 40 moves.

With six games remaining, the score is even at 9-9. But Kasparov retains the advantage in the 24-game match, because in the event of a 12-12 tie, he will remain champion.

Each player has scored three victories with 12 games drawn.

A player needs 12 1/2 points or six victories to win the championship. A win scores one point and a draw a half.

The 19th game is scheduled for Wednesday with Kasparov playing white.
