- This has been a week of cancellations for the La Jolla Chamber Music Society. A mere two days ago, pianist Claudio Arrau canceled the solo recital he had been scheduled to play this evening at Civic Theatre as part of the society’s downtown Celebrity Series.

According to spokeswoman Helen Erewan, the octogenarian musician is suffering from the flu. His program has been rescheduled for Feb. 14 at the Civic Theatre, and patrons will be able to use their Dec. 2 tickets.

Last week, noted harpsichordist and former UCSD music faculty member Rosalyn Tureck canceled her Saturday night recital at Sherwood Auditorium. This gave the chamber music society sufficient time to line up Austrian violinist Thomas Zehetmair to fill the void.

SummerFest ’88 director Heiichiro Ohyama had previously signed the 26-year-old performer for August’s festival. A prodigy with a rising career, he won his first competition at age 14, and at 17 won first prize in Salzburg’s International Mozart Competition.

Though Zehetmair has played concertos with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony, his La Jolla program of sonatas by Mozart, Bach, Janacek and Grieg will mark his North American recital debut. He will be accompanied by Los Angeles pianist Armen Guzelimian.
