Local News in Brief : Animal Policy Protest

Share

About 100 protesters representing a coalition of major animal rights groups picketed Tuesday outside the Los Angeles County Hall of Administration to oppose the county’s practice of selling animals from its shelters for laboratory research.

Members of about 30 major animal rights organizations joined in the downtown demonstration as part of a national “Stop Pound Seizure Day” rally that included similar protests in other cities.

Actress Cloris Leachman appeared before the Board of Supervisors as a representative for the protesters and decried the county’s policy of selling or releasing unclaimed cats and dogs from animal shelters for biomedical research and other laboratory purposes.

Brian Berger, director of the county Department of Animal Care and Control, also spoke to the group outside the Hall of Administration and assured them he would meet with their representatives to try and resolve the issue. Berger told reporters that about 700 animals were sold from county shelters this year, down from the 2,400 sold four years ago.
