Canoga Park Explosion Caused by Gas Buildup

A powerful explosion at a Canoga Park apartment building this week was caused when an accumulation of natural gas was ignited, the Los Angeles Fire Department said Friday.

The blast Thursday at the 52-unit Park Regency on Saticoy Street destroyed two second-floor apartments. It left four more units uninhabitable and several others damaged, but no one was injured, officials said. Six families left homeless were given shelter arranged by the Red Cross, authorities said.

Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said investigators had not determined the source of the leak or how it was ignited.

“It is going to be tough to determine that,” Wells said. “There is almost nothing left of those apartments.”
