Winter Sports Highlights : MacLean’s 47 Lead Simi Valley, 93-74
What started out as a semifinal game at the Simi Valley basketball tournament Friday night turned into a contest between Don MacLean and Darrick Martin to see who could stun the crowd the most.
Simi Valley easily defeated St. Anthony, 93-74, but the battle between MacLean and Martin was much closer.
Simi Valley’s MacLean, who dazzled the crowd with alley-oop dunks and even a three-pointer, finished with 47 points, including 13 of his team’s first 14 in the second half.
Martin, a St. Anthony guard, silenced the crowd with his behind-the-back passes and had 42 points in a losing cause before fouling out with 1:46 to play.
In the first half, Martin was 9 of 12 from the field and finished the game 13 of 14 from the free-throw line.
With the score tied, 32-32, with less than five minutes left in the first half, Simi Valley went on a 14-2 scoring run to lead at the half, 46-34. St. Anthony never threatened again.
Simi Valley will play Santa Barbara at 8 tonight in the championship game. Santa Barbara defeated Santa Clara, 68-58, in Friday’s earlier semifinal game. Dos Pueblos defeated Chilliwack, 57-41, in a consolation-bracket game.
