College Basketball Roundup : Villanova Defeats California in First Meeting, 65-50
Doug West scored 19 points to lead Villanova to a 65-50 win over California Sunday at Philadelphia in the first meeting between the two schools.
California turned the ball over nine times in the first half while making only 6 of 25 shots.
Villanova had eight turnovers but scored the last six points of the half to lead, 25-17.
After a three-point shot by Keith Smith early in the second half brought the Golden Bears to within three points, 29-26, the Wildcats scored 11 straight points, seven by West, and led, 40-26, with 13:28 left to play.
A layup by Smith cut Villanova’s lead to 54-43 with 3:24 remaining, but Villanova (4-1) scored four straight points to seal the win.
Mark Plansky had 13 points and Tom Greis had 10 for Villanova.
Smith had 18 points, 15 in the second half for California (1-2).
Virginia 72, Connecticut 59--Guards John Johnson and Richard Morgan each scored 15 points in the first half to help the Cavaliers build a 46-20 halftime lead in a nonconference game at Hartford, Conn.
Virginia (3-1) outscored the Huskies, 17-0, over a seven-minute stretch. During that span Johnson scored 7 points, Darrick Simms 6 and Morgan 5.
Connecticut (2-1) never threatened in the second half. Jeff King scored 14 points and Phil Gamble had 10 for the Huskies. Johnson finished with a game-high 22 points.
Nevada Las Vegas 120, Hawaii Loa 47--The Runnin’ Rebels took a 20-0 lead before the Mongoose scored their first basket six minutes into the game Saturday night at Honolulu.
After leading at the half, 56-29, Nevada Las Vegas (3-0) outscored Hawaii Loa (2-8), 64-18, in the second half.
Gerald Paddio scored 20 points and Stacy Augmon and Jarvis Basnight each had 18 for UNLV. Adante Harris led Hawaii Loa with 12 points.
Yale 78, Wagner 69--John Rice scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to their first win of the season and a third-place finish in the Seton Hall tournament at South Orange, N.J.
Mark Whitehead added 16 points for Yale (1-3). Dean Borges scored 24 points and Todd Grain added 23 for the Seahawks (1-2).
