The arrest of a 17-year-old youth allegedly attempting to rob a church at 3rd Avenue and Date Street on Monday night led San Diego police to arrest two men wanted in connection with a torture and killing in Jefferson County, Ohio, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Police responded to a prowler call at the First Presbyterian Church, 320 Date St., at 8:50 p.m. and arrested the 17-year-old. The boy also matched the description of a man who had robbed and assaulted a San Diego couple earlier Monday night in the 2300 block of C Street, Robinson said.

Police linked the juvenile to the November slaying of Kevin Burks, a 25-year-old Steubenville, Ohio, man, and officers began the search for two other men wanted in the killing, Robinson said.

Police found David L. Hudson, 28, of Irondale, Ohio, and Peter L. Martin, 23, of East Liverpool, Ohio, sleeping in a car in Golden Hill Park. They were arrested and placed in County Jail on warrants charging murder. The juvenile is detained in Juvenile Hall on the same charges.

A fourth murder suspect, Robert Carpenter, 25, also of East Liverpool, turned himself in Dec. 1 to authorities in Pasco County, Fla.

Burks’ body was found Nov. 27 on a hillside in rural Jefferson County. His throat had been slashed and he had been shot at least four times.

A sheriff’s deputy from Jefferson County flew to San Diego on Monday to question the suspects.
