The first of two public meetings for citizens to express their views on salaries for the San Diego mayor and City Council will be held at 7 p.m. today at City Hall.

Every two years, San Diego’s Salary Setting Commission is responsible for recommending salaries for council members and the mayor.

The council may adopt the amount recommended by the commission or a lower one.

Currently, council members’ salaries are $45,000 a year plus $13,284 in fringe benefits. The mayor’s salary is ordinarily $60,000 a year plus $16,318 in fringe benefits, but Mayor Maureen O’Connor has reduced her salary to $50,000 a year.
