The new home of Alice Hubler in Pasadena will be the site of today’s meeting of the Women’s Assn. of the First Presbyterian Church of Inglewood. Her husband, the Rev. Kenneth Hubler, retired a few years ago as pastor of Angeles Mesa Presbyterian Church and Mrs. Hubler became active in the Inglewood church, serving two years as program chairman of the association.

Perry Hume II, 67, of Redondo Beach, has been awarded the Margaret Lynch Area Exemplary Service Award by the California Reading Assn. for his efforts in support of reading. He is a member of the Torrance Area Reading Council and for the past five years has been chairman of the area Authors’ Fair, which brings published writers into area schools one day each year to discuss writing and reading with students. This year, 105 authors took part, meeting with students in 80 South Bay area schools. The Torrance Area Reading Council covers 12 South Bay cities: El Segundo, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, Lennox, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates and Torrance.

Dr. Myles Edwin Lee has joined the staff of Centinela Hospital Medical Center as director of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, according to center President Russell S. Stromberg. Lee will perform all major cardiac surgical procedures. Before his appointment at Centinela, Lee spent 11 years as an associate surgeon in the department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Westchester resident Linda C. Mondragon was awarded a $500 scholarship to Loyola Marymount University when she won a writing contest. The contest, open to California high school seniors, was held in conjunction with the university’s annual writers’ conference in November. Her short story, “After the Rain,” was selected from dozens of entries offered by high school seniors throughout the state.

Dr. Melvin F. White has been appointed speakers’ bureau chairman of the Los Angeles County Chiropractic Society. White and his wife, Sylvia, are residents of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Rancho Palos Verdes resident Celia Gonzales Torres has been honored by the Los Angeles County Commission for Women for her contributions to women’s issues, rights and equality and for serving as a role model. She is the executive vice president of Torres Enterprises, an investment and management service for hotels, motels and apartments. She serves on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Los Angeles YWCA task force where she chairs the Latinas Services task force and is a regent for Mount St. Mary’s College and Loyola Marymount University. She is also chairwoman of the National Network of Hispanic Women.
