Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Group to Reconsider Proposal for New Tax

Share

A group of residents who suggested levying an admission tax on amusements and attractions in the city will reconsider the proposal after encountering overwhelming opposition to the idea, the group’s leader said Thursday.

Doug Kintz, president of Anaheim Home (Homeowners for Maintaining Their Environment) said his group might consider shelving the plan for lack of support.

The group had earlier said it was prepared to mount an initiative campaign to put the tax to a public vote if city officials failed to adopt an ordinance by Feb. 2, 1988.

Leaders of Anaheim Home recommended at a City Council meeting last week that a 10% tax be levied on admission tickets to Disneyland, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim Stadium, theaters and other attractions, as a way to increase city revenues.

A majority of council members have indicated that they oppose the tax and have said they are not likely to bring the issue to a vote.

Kintz expressed disappointment at the council’s position, saying the tax should not “automatically be ruled out” but conceding that his group did not expect the “negative feedback that we got.”
