Community College Basketball Roundup : Muller-Stach Leads Golden West Past Citrus, 86-80

Freshman forward Markus Muller-Stach scored a game-high 26 points to lead Golden West College to an 86-80 victory over Citrus in the first round of the Golden West men’s basketball tournament Thursday at Golden West.

Anthony Howard made both ends of three one-and-one opportunities in the final two minutes to keep Citrus from mounting a comeback.

Howard finished with 13 points and forward Dan Westmoreland had 14. Westmoreland led Golden West with 13 rebounds and teammate Jim Stewart had 11.

Golden West was 23 of 28 from the free-throw line in the second half and 30 of 37 in the game.

Golden West (6-2) plays Cypress in one semifinal at 8 tonight, and Cerritos meets Compton in the other at 6.

Golden West led, 41-34, at halftime, but Citrus (1-7) was never able to get closer than eight points in the final 10 minutes of the game.

In another first-round game:

Cypress 68, Glendale 63--Jim Sammon scored 4 of his 15 points in the final 1:21 to lead Cypress.

Sammon made two free throws with 1:21 left as Cypress (9-1) took a 64-61 lead. He then hit a base-line jumper to give Cypress a 66-61 lead with 42 seconds remaining.

Jeff Green and Kris Brodowski scored 15 points each for Cypress.

In the San Jose Tournament:

Orange Coast 81, Canada 66--Dareck Crane scored 20 points and Dave Miles 19 for the Pirates (8-3).

In the Santa Barbara Tournament:

Hancock College 69, Saddleback 60--Trevor Wright scored 23 points to lead Hancock (10-0) in the first-round game. Saddleback’s Joe Hudson scored 19 points, and teammate Vincent Smalls added 13.
