Local News in Brief : Hunt for Plane Scrubbed

Share

A sheriff’s search and rescue team and helicopter scoured the rugged Angeles National Forest near Palmdale on Monday but failed to find any trace of an airplane that reportedly crashed.

The hunt was called off at 7:50 a.m. after searchers unsuccessfully combed the hills near California 39 and Angeles Crest Highway, Sgt. George Grein said.

The search began after an unidentified Pasadena woman called deputies at 10:55 p.m. Sunday and reported she had heard a plane in apparent trouble flying toward the San Gabriel Mountains, Deputy R. Marquez said. She told deputies she then heard the sound of an explosion.

“Other than the original information, there was nothing to back it (the report) up,” Grein said.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the agency had not received any reports of downed or overdue aircraft.
