The Immigration and Naturalization Service’s western region, which accounts for 58% of all applications filed nationwide for legal residency under the new Immigration Reform Act, was lauded by U.S. Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III at a San Francisco news conference. About 744,000 of some 1.08 million applications nationwide have been filed in the region, which includes California, under the 12-month legalization program that ends Nov. 30, 1988. While calling the program a success, Meese said there are no plans to extend the expiration date.
