SportsScope : Wave Hitter Julie Evans Hailed as Best Player in WCAC

Senior outside hitter Julie Evans, who led the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team to the championship of the West Coast Athletic Conference, was named the conference player of the year by coaches.

Barbara Blizzard, another Pepperdine outside hitter, was named freshman of the year and was also picked on the all-conference second team. USF Coach Laurie Corbelli was selected coach of the year.

The WCAC first team includes three other Pepperdine players: junior middle blocker Lisa Bevington, senior setter Lee Hoven and junior outside hitter Leslie Wohlford. First-team selections from Loyola Marymount are junior outside hitter Leslie Wohlford and senior outside hitter Lori Rodman. Rounding out the first team is Gonzaga outside hitter Lisa Petticord, a freshman.

D’ney Goodfellow-Granger, who coached the Santa Monica College women’s volleyball team to a Western State Conference championship, was named the conference coach of the year, and SMC sophomore Stacy Schipper was named conference player of the year.

Corsairs Kelly Carroll and Amy Prout were selected to the all-conference first team, teammates Valerie McCormick and Frances Patterson were second-team selections, and Corsairs Tamara Evans and Darine Wendland received honorable mention.

The UCLA women’s basketball team, 2-3 overall, is on a road trip this week and next. The Bruins will play at Brigham Young tonight, at Illinois on Sunday and at Monmouth of New Jersey on Tuesday.

Last Sunday UCLA lost to defending NCAA champion Tennessee, 89-63, after trailing at half time, 38-35. Senior Dora Dome led the Bruins with 35 points and 7 rebounds.

The Pepperdine women’s basketball team (2-2) will meet Wayland Baptist today in the first round of Nevada Reno’s Wolfpack Holiday Tournament, an eight-team competition through Saturday.

Last week the Waves finished second in the Zuma Jay’s-Lady Wave Tournament in Malibu, defeating Oklahoma State, 67-66, but losing to Oklahoma State, 81-76, in the championship game. Pepperdine senior forward Earnesta Grace scored 39 points in the two games and was named the West Coast Athletic Conference women’s player of the week.

Last Monday Pepperdine lost at Northern Arizona, 55-42.

The annual Hamilton High School basketball tournament, which began Wednesday, will continue from 3 to 8:15 p.m. Friday and from 1:15 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the school in West Los Angeles.

Teams are University, Los Angeles Polytechnic, Canoga Park, Lincoln, Jefferson, Kennedy, Venice and Hamilton.

Seven UCLA women swimmers will compete in the U. S. Open Meet on Sunday through Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. The competitors are Catherine Capriles and Sue Potrepka in the backstroke, Jeannette Beitz and Jenny Susser, sprint freestyle, Missy Herndon, distance freestyle, Melissa Skinner, breaststroke, and Sheri Smith in the butterfly.

Bel-Air Prep School will start its boys basketball tournament today through Saturday at Harvard School, 3700 Coldwater Canyon Road, North Hollywood.

Teams are St. Bonaventure, Buckley, Oakwood, Mary Star, Holy Martyrs, Cantwell, Pater Noster and Bel-Air.

Games will be played from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today and Friday and from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
