Local News in Brief : Dismemberment Case Bail

Share

Bail was set Thursday at $7.5 million for a Hacienda Heights physician charged with strangling his 11-year-old son, dismembering his body and dissecting the flesh into more than 200 pieces.

Dr. Khalid Parwez, 38, had been held in custody without bail since his arrest Dec. 2. But on Wednesday, Pomona Municipal Judge Robert Dukes dismissed a special circumstances allegation that had qualified Parwez for the death penalty.

His attorney, Leslie Abramson, argued Thursday that since Parwez no longer faced a possible death penalty, he should be granted reasonable bail and suggested $300,000. Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Burns argued that Parwez should either remain in custody without bail or a high bail should be set to ensure that he does not go free.

Parwez is scheduled to return to court Jan. 11 for an evidence hearing.
