Michael Dokes, in Return to Ring, Stops K.P. Porter in the Fifth Round
Michael Dokes, who had problems with drugs and the law for several years, fought for the first time in 33 months Thursday night and won.
The 29-year-old former World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion, stopped K.P. Porter at 25 seconds of the fifth round.
Dokes, 245, of Las Vegas, won his first fight since March 15, 1985. The former champion, who is serving five years’ probation after pleading guilty to a drug-possession charge, was released from a drug rehabilitation center last June.
Dokes, 30-1-2 with 17 knockouts, is next scheduled to fight against an opponent to be named on the undercard of the Mike Tyson-Larry Holmes heavyweight title fight Jan. 22 at Atlantic City, N.J.
It was the sixth straight loss for Porter, 201, of Battle Creek, Mich., who is 13-6-1.
In a scheduled 10-round middleweight bout, Michael Olajide stopped Frankie Owen in the sixth.
