Local News in Brief : Sludge Plan Criticized
A plan to dispose of some of Los Angeles’ sewage sludge at a dump in the northeast San Fernando Valley has drawn the ire of Councilman Ernani Bernardi, who introduced a motion Friday to block the proposal.
The Lopez Canyon landfill above Lake View Terrace already receives most of the city’s household trash, and to dump sludge there would “add insult to injury,” said Bernardi, who represents the area.
At issue is a city Sanitation Bureau plan to possibly dump up to 1,200 tons of sludge a day at the Lopes Canyon landfill. The plan needs the approval of the state Water Quality Control Board and the California Waste Management Board.
The Lopez Canyon landfill might be used if other, privately owned landfills are not available to take the sludge, which is removed from raw sewage during treatment at the Hyperion plant, Sanitation Bureau spokeswoman Anna Sklar said.
