Several college football teams resumed practice for the holiday bowl season, but at least one has suspended it for Christmas. Miami, which will play Oklahoma in a likely national championship matchup New Year’s Day, held its last practice for the Orange Bowl game until after Christmas and Coach Jimmy Johnson said he thinks the break will help the Hurricanes.

“It has been a long season,” Johnson said. “I think the rest will kind of get our guys rejuvenated.”

The second-ranked Hurricanes played two weeks later into the season than the top-ranked Sooners, whose last game was Nov. 21.

While the Hurricanes will take four days off, their opponent will be conducting two-a-day workouts in Miami. Coach Barry Switzer said he decided to bring the Sooners to Miami 12 days before the game because of the weather.

“We had ice and 10 inches of snow in Oklahoma,” Switzer said. “It’s very difficult to practice.”

Meanwhile, Notre Dame has been practicing for its Cotton Bowl game with Texas A&M; and Coach Lou Holtz says he still hasn’t decided who will start at quarterback: Sophomore Tony Rice or senior Terry Andrysiak, who missed the second half of the season with a broken collarbone.

Notre Dame lost some of its passing attack when Andrysiak was injured in a loss to Pittsburgh and Rice started the remaining seven games. Rice rushed for 337 yards and 7 touchdowns, but completed only one touchdown pass and had four interceptions.
