Local News in Brief : Slumlord Surrenders Early

Convicted slumlord Milton Avol surrendered two days early Tuesday to begin serving a five-month jail sentence for health and building code violations at three apartment buildings.

The 64-year-old Beverly Hills neurosurgeon “walked into the courtroom with his attorney and announced he wanted to surrender,” city attorney spokesman Mike Qualls said.

Los Angeles Municipal Judge Marion Obera stopped her court proceedings when Avol showed up and ordered him taken into custody, Qualls said.

Deputy City Atty. Stephanie Sautner said that Avol showed up early “to avoid the media,” but the landlord’s attorney, Donald Steier, said “he did it to accommodate my calendar.”

Avol was sentenced to the jail term by Obera in July, 1986, for violating his probation by failing to correct slum conditions at the three Los Angeles apartment buildings. He had been allowed to delay serving the sentence during his appeal.

In 1985, Avol was sentenced to 30 days of “house arrest” at one of his own apartment buildings.
