College Basketball Roundup : Sooners Erupt in 2nd Half, Win, 151-99

Stacey King scored 31 points as 12th-ranked Oklahoma scored a school-record 79 points in the second half Thursday to defeat Dayton, 151-99, in the second round of the Chaminade Christmas tournament in Honolulu.

Oklahoma, which leads the nation with an average of 113 points a game, defeated Centenary College, 152-84, last week.

Oklahoma (9-0) connected on 11 of 25 three-point shots.

Overall, the Sooners shot 59% from the field, making 60 of 102 attempts.

The Sooners took a 20-10 lead in the opening five minutes on the strength of Rick Grace’s eight points, including two three-pointers, and Dave Sieger’s pair of three-point baskets. With 9:57 left in the half, Oklahoma took a 20-point lead, 43-23, when Terrence Mullins connected on the team’s sixth straight three-pointer.

Dayton (7-2) went on a 12-6 run, led by Anthony Corbitt’s seven points, to cut Oklahoma’s lead to 49-45. But the Sooners came back with a 23-11 spurt.

Oklahoma led at the half, 72-46.

King grabbed 10 rebounds, and Harvey Grant added 24 points and 11 rebounds for Oklahoma.

Virginia 87, Georgia 54--The Cavaliers, who lost to Oklahoma, 109-61, in the first round of the Chaminade tournament, shot 67% from the floor to take a 37-19 lead.

The Bulldogs never got within 20 points of the Cavaliers in the second half.

Virginia (5-5) was led by Mel Kennedy, who scored 20 points. Willie Anderson scored 18 points for Georgia (7-3), which made just 27% of its shots.

Nevada Las Vegas 90, Creighton 59--The 15th-ranked Rebels (7-0), using a trapping defense, forced 12 turnovers in the first half and raced to 53-27 lead at intermission en route to winning the Rebel Roundup title Wednesday night at Las Vegas.

Forward Gerald Paddio led the Rebels with 20 points, including 15 in the first half.

Forward Jarvis Basnight, the tournament MVP, had 16 points.

Creighton, which started three freshmen, fell to 4-4.
