Local News in Brief : Jetliner’s Engine Trouble

Share

A United Airlines DC-10 bound for Hawaii returned to Los Angeles International Airport when oil started spewing out of one of the plane’s three engines two hours after the jetliner took off Friday afternoon. The plane landed safely.

“It is up to the pilot to make such decisions and he decided it would be more prudent to turn back than to continue on to Hilo with two engines which he could have done,” an airline spokeswoman said.

Flight 115 was nearly fully loaded with 208 passengers and 12 crew members.

The passengers were lodged in hotels overnight and were scheduled to take off this morning after another plane is flown in from San Francisco.
