Local News in Brief : Doctors Join School Effort
The San Pedro Peninsula Hospital and 34 of its doctors have contributed $30,400 to a parents group that is trying to prevent the closing of Miraleste High School and establish a new school system on the east side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Dr. Richard Ellis, speaking for the hospital physicians, said they are concerned about the safety of 1,200 students who will have to commute to schools on the west side of the Peninsula if Miraleste is closed next spring.
Ellis said the doctors, who live and work in the San Pedro/Peninsula area, also believe that the closing of eastside schools is depriving the community of the “balance” needed to make it a “desirable place to live.” Ellis, who lives in Rancho Palos Verdes, has three children, including a freshman at Miraleste High School.
Susan Brooks, a spokeswoman for the parents, said the medical group’s donations bring total contributions to the East Peninsula Education Council’s legal fund to about $140,000, including pledges.
The council is seeking a preliminary injunction that would bar the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District from carrying out its plan to close Miraleste and sell the closed Dapplegray Intermediate campus.
