Rain, Warmer Weather to Follow Cold

It’s almost over. After several days of unusually cold temperatures in San Diego--including a chilly 37 degrees Sunday that tied a 61-year-old record--it appears a warming trend is about to make a visit.

The bad news, though, is that along with the warmth will come rain.

Dan Atkin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said it best:

“Instead of being dry and cold, as it has been for the last several days, it’s going to be wet and cool the next few days.”

Warmer at Night

An incoming storm system that is expected to drop light rain in San Diego this afternoon and Tuesday is also bringing warmer nighttime temperatures caused by higher humidity and cloud cover.

As a prelude, a freeze warning in effect for agricultural areas--where some damage to avocado and citrus trees has occurred--was rescinded for late Sunday night and early this morning.

“It’s going to be warmer at night by several degrees,” Atkin said.

While the low of 37 registered at Lindbergh Field tied a recored set back in 1926, nighttime temperatures throughout the county inched their way upward by several degrees.

Unlike Saturday night, when several mountain communities, such as Mt. Laguna and Julian, registered lows in the teens, the lowest temperatures Sunday were in the low 20s.

As a compensation for the warmer nights, the expected daytime highs are expected to be lower the next few days, in the 50- to 60-degree range, according to the National Weather Service.
