PRO FOOTBALL : Eagles Turn It Into a Losing Season for the Bills

The Buffalo Bills, who appeared to be peaking in a 27-3 victory over Indianapolis three weeks ago, ended the season Sunday with their second straight loss.

Anthony Toney scored twice and Keith Byars ran for 102 yards in 23 carries as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Bills, 17-7.

“This was a humiliating experience for me and it should be for the players, too,” Bill Coach Marv Levy said. “We had a chance to go out the rest of the season as winners. Now we can’t. If you want to win, you better be able to run and stop the run. And we didn’t do either one.”

Toney scored on a 2-yard run and an 18-yard pass play, and Randall Cunningham completed 16 of 21 passes for 177 yards for the Eagles.

Byars went over the 100-yard mark for the first time this season.

“He’s still not playing the way he did in college, but I’ve been telling you that he’ll be a great, super back,” Eagle Coach Buddy Ryan said of Byars. “The defensive line keyed off on the quarterback, and that’s what got the running game open for us.”

The Eagles finished the season 7-8, but were 7-5 in non-strike games. The Bills, who were 1-2 during the strike, also finished at 7-8.

Philadelphia defensive end Reggie White sacked Jim Kelly twice, giving him 21 sacks for the season, one short of the National Football League record set by Mark Gastineau of the New York Jets in 1984.

Kelly completed 20 of 39 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. Bill linebacker Cornelius Bennett sacked Cunningham four times.
