Local News in Brief : Shelter Plan a Success
More than 3,000 homeless men and women were able to find shelter during last week’s cold snap by accepting emergency hotel vouchers issued by Los Angeles County, officials said Tuesday.
But only six people sought shelter Christmas Eve in an armory in Culver City, the county’s homeless program coordinator, Donna Dunn, reported to the Board of Supervisors. The armory was opened by the county at the request of Santa Monica officials, who had estimated that as many as 150 people might need shelter.
Overall, despite the low turnout at the armory, the county’s program for finding shelter for the homeless when temperatures plunge to 40 degrees and below “worked very well,” Dunn said.
Social workers and other officials distributed 2,823 hotel vouchers to individuals and families between Dec. 23 and Dec. 27, she said. With families getting one voucher for all members, the total served by vouchers was about 3,300 people, Dunn said.
The vouchers were distributed in areas outside the city of Los Angeles, which has its own voucher program.
