Share

A 31-year-old transient was arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing a van and leading Anaheim police on a short, high-speed chase that ended when the stolen vehicle crashed into a tree, police said.

Anaheim Lt. Jack Parra said the suspect is Mark Anthony Carlile, 31. The incident began when police said Carlile at Brookhurst Street and Broadway about 1:15 p.m. when Carlile jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off while the van’s owner was pumping gasoline.

The owner flagged down a passing patrol car, which then pursued the van for six minutes on the San Diego Freeway and down the wrong side of Ball Road. Carlile, police said, crashed the van into a tree on W. Vermont Avenue and was arrested when he tried to run away.
