A San Jose man who ran over and killed three children then backed his car over them while trying to escape was sentenced to 21 years and eight months to life in state prison. Jose Bugarin, 26, pleaded no contest earlier this month to a second-degree murder charge and guilty to two vehicular manslaughter charges in a negotiated agreement. He was sentenced before Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Edgar Taylor. Deputy Dist. Atty. Alan Nudelman said Bugarin will not come before a parole board for 14 years. Bugarin, who was under the influence of alcohol, drove his car onto the front lawn of a South San Jose home in September and hit the children. Bugarin’s passenger, Alvaro Escobar, 31, who allegedly shouted for Bugarin to back up in order to get away, pleaded no contest to charges and is to be sentenced Feb. 8.
