Jim Mora, who led the New Orleans Saints to their first winning season and first playoff berth, was named National Football League coach of the year by the Associated Press and NFC coach of the year by United Press International.
Mora joined the Saints last year after leading the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL to two straight league championships.
After guiding the Saints to a 7-9 record in his first season, Mora led them to a 12-3 record this season.
Meanwhile, quarterback John Elway, who carried the injury-plagued Denver Broncos to the best record in the AFC, was named the NFL’s most valuable player by the AP.
