Rodgers Defeats Shorter in a Masters 10K

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Bill Rodgers outfinished longtime rival Frank Shorter Saturday to win the Charlotte Observer 10-kilometer run in the first meeting between the two on the 40-and-over masters circuit.
Rodgers, of Dover, Mass., the four-time winner of both the Boston and New York City marathons who turned 40 Dec. 23, broke the tape in 30 minutes 49 seconds.
Rodgers won $5,000.
Shorter, of Boulder, Colo., finished 21 seconds back.
