Tennis Roundup : Shriver Struggles to Beat Gomer

Top-seeded Pam Shriver struggled to beat unseeded Sara Gomer of Great Britain, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, Wednesday in second-round play of the New South Wales tennis tournament at Sydney, Australia.

Gomer, ranked 77th in the world, won the first-set tiebreaker, 7-2, and charged into the second set by breaking Shriver in the third game. But Shriver broke Gomer in the sixth game and won the set, 7-5.

Jim Pugh, the sixth-seeded player, struggled through a marathon second-round match to advance to the quarterfinals of the $93,400 Benson and Hedges tournament at Auckland, New Zealand.

The 25-year-old Californian was on court for 2 1/2 hours before overcoming unseeded Swede Christian Bergstrom, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
