Collegiate Tennis Event Begins Today
First-round action at the National Collegiate tennis tournament will begin today at yet another new site, the third in the last four years.
This year, the event is at Shadow Mountain Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Desert, a few miles from last year’s site, which was in Cathedral City.
Among the top-seeded players in the men’s field are Andrew Sznajder of Pepperdine, and Byron Talbot and Shelby Cannon of Tennessee. The top women entered are Sonia Hahn of Kentucky, Lisa Green of Stanford, and Joni Urban of UCLA.
Both the men’s and women’s singles finals are scheduled for Sunday. Singles champions last year were Richey Reneberg of SMU and Patty Fendick of Stanford, both of whom are now playing professionally.
