King Harbor Marlin Club to Honor Anglers for Biggest Catches of 1987

The King Harbor Marlin Club will have its 15th annual awards banquet Saturday night at Charlie Brown’s in Torrance.

The club will award trophies to members who caught the largest fish during its 1987 tournaments.

In the men’s division, Jerry Austin was the winner with a 162-pound marlin.

In the women’s division, Florence Henry won with a 132-pounder.

South Bay Catches: Charles Gunther of Inglewood caught the South Bay whopper of the week with a 27-pound halibut fishing aboard the Betty O.

Al Huston of Santa Monica, fishing aboard the Spitfire, cut up a squid and won the jackpot with a 24-pound halibut.

Rodney Brods of Redondo Beach, fishing the twin rocks area aboard the Redondo Special, won the jackpot with a 21 1/2-pound halibut.

Doris Farrel of Santa Monica won the jackpot when she brought to gaff a 20-pound halibut aboard the Betty O.

Claude Adams of Long Beach, fishing aboard the Toronado at the Osborne bank, won the catch of the day with a 19-pound lingcod.

Bill Stangley of Long Beach, fishing for rock cod aboard the Sea Spray at the oil rigs, won the jackpot with a 21 1/2-pound sheepshead.

Fish Report: Halibut continue to be plentiful in the South Bay.

The flat fish bite on rock cod boats fishing from 150 to 200 feet of water have sent anglers home with limits.

The legal halibut catch--22 inches--has outnumbered the short fish being released.

The outer islands continue to produce limits of rock cod, sheepshead and bass, all caught with live squid.

At Marina del Rey Sportfishing, the half-day boat Happy Man had a count of 25 halibut and 125 sculpin.

The Spitfire, on the three-quarter-day trip, had 28 halibut, 27 sculpin and 33 rock cod.

At Redondo Sportfishing, the City of Redondo on its morning trip Tuesday caught 34 halibut and 30 rock fish.

The Challenger fished Osborne bank and had a catch of 245 calico bass, 44 sheepshead and 12 whitefish.

At L. A. Harbor Sportfishing out of Ports O’ Call, the Matt Walsh on its morning trip caught 46 sand bass, 12 bonito and 4 halibut.

The Grande fished Catalina and came back with 339 calico bass, 22 sheepshead and 9 sculpin.

At Long Beach Harbor Sportfishing, the Sea Spray took 52 rock cod, 70 whitefish and 18 sheepshead.

The Victory got 107 whitefish, 16 sheepshead, 51 calico bass and 21 bonito.

Freshwater Catches: Merlin Bush of Gardena caught an 11-pound, 8-ounce catfish in the Goose Bay area of Vail Lake.

Tony Yamaoka of Gardena, using a night crawler at Anaheim Lake, caught a 9-pound rainbow trout.

Phil Hazeltine of Wilmington fished the west shore of Irvine Lake and caught a 6 1/2-pound rainbow trout using a night crawler.
