A 3-year-old Mission Viejo boy was seriously injured Thursday when the family station wagon rolled down the driveway at his home in the 24000 block of Castilla Lane, crushing his head, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The boy, identified by the California Highway Patrol as Kelly R. Winrich, was in serious condition late Thursday in the intensive care unit of Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo where he was being treated for a skull fracture, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred about noon, the CHP said, after Kelly’s mother, Debra L. Winrich, had backed the family station wagon into the driveway and began to unload groceries.

A preliminary investigation by the CHP indicated that Winrich had left the car in neutral and had failed to set the hand break. The car rolled down the driveway toward the street.

The mother tried to jump back into the car to stop it. But before she could do so, it struck the tricycle her son was riding in the street.

The car’s right front tire ran over the boy’s head, a CHP spokesman said.
