Pacific 10 Roundup : Oregon, Like Rest of the Conference, Is No Match for Top-Ranked Arizona, 70-54

Sean Elliott and Anthony Cook scored 18 points apiece Saturday, and top-ranked Arizona continued its domination of the Pacific 10 Conference with a 70-54 victory over Oregon at Eugene, Ore.

Tom Tolbert added 14 points for the Wildcats (16-1 overall, 6-0 in the Pac-10). Even though the Wildcats weren’t challenged, this was their closest conference game yet. Arizona has beaten six Pac-10 opponents by an average of 27.5 points.

Oregon (7-6, 2-2) tried to slow the tempo in an effort to stay close in the first half, but Arizona still led, 32-19, at intermission, behind Cook’s 11 points.

The Ducks cut the lead to 11 points early in the second half, but Arizona scored eight straight points and never was seriously threatened.

Arizona built 23-point margins twice in the second half, the last time at 58-35 with 5:51 to play.

Oregon’s Anthony Taylor, who struggled offensively through most of the game, scored 13 points in the final five minutes and finished with 19 points.

California 77, Washington 75--Keith Smith hit two free throws with 17 seconds remaining, and the Bears won their first game in nearly a month by beating the Huskies at Berkeley.

The victory for Cal (5-9, 2-4) was its first since a Dec. 21 win over UCLA.

The Huskies (4-10, 0-5) had one last chance to tie the game, but Cal’s Ryan Drew stole the ball from Eldridge Recasner with five seconds left.

Matt Beeuwsaert scored 25 points for the Bears, making 7 of 8 shots and 9 free throws without a miss, in addition to collecting 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

Oregon State 76, Arizona State 68--Bill Sherwood scored 24 points, and the Beavers survived a rally by the Sun Devils at Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers (9-4, 3-1) led, 41-27, at halftime, and Earl Martin’s basket with 14:30 made it a 60-37 advantage before Arizona State (10-5, 4-2) surged back.

The Sun Devils outscored the Beavers, 25-6, in the next 10 minutes, and Eric Holloway’s basket with 3:40 left shaved the lead to 66-62. Oregon State responded with a 10-0 run to seal the victory.

Mark Becker scored 14 points for Arizona State.

Washington St. 70, Stanford 68--David Sanders, who led all scorers with 32 points, made a three-point shot with 10 seconds left in overtime to give the Cougars (6-6, 3-2) a come-from-behind victory over the Cardinal (11-6, 3-3) at Stanford.

Sanders, a sophomore guard, had five of the Cougars’ seven points in the overtime period and made 7 of 11 three-point attempts in the game.

Todd Lichti and Greg Butler each scored 16 points for Stanford.
