A Kern County sheriff’s deputy in Bakersfield shot and killed a man brandishing a knife, marking the third time this month that a police officer in that city has been involved in a shooting. The incident occurred after Fred Vincente Valenzuela, 24, allegedly raised a knife and advanced toward the officer. Officers reported he had been drinking and ignored orders to stop, drawing two shots from the deputy’s handgun. Officer Steven Hansen was reassigned to administrative duties pending an investigation into the death, the Sheriff’s Department reported. Two other men were shot by Bakersfield policemen in separate incidents earlier this month, but both officers were cleared by a departmental shooting review board.
