Grady Mateen’s dunk with seven seconds remaining gave Ohio State a 70-68 upset of No. 7 Michigan in Big Ten Conference play Monday night at Columbus, Ohio.

It was the Buckeyes’ second victory over a Top 20 team in five days. Last Thursday, Ohio State (9-5 overall, 2-2 in the Big Ten) defeated No. 17 Iowa, 87-83.

The loss ended Michigan’s 13-game winning streak and left the Wolverines at 14-2 and 3-1, dropping them into a tie for second place in the conference with Illinois.

Jay Burson led Ohio State with 18 points, with Jerry Francis and Curtis Wilson each scoring 12. Rumeal Robinson had 19 to lead Michigan, which had been averaging 94.3 points a game.

Syracuse 90, Boston College 60--Stephen Thompson scored 21 points, 7 during a 24-8 spurt in the second half, to lead the 14th-ranked Orangemen in a Big East game at Syracuse, N.Y.

Boston College, which defeated No. 15 Georgetown on Saturday, pulled within 46-44 on Doug Able’s basket with 15:03 to play. But Syracuse, which broke a two-game losing streak to improve to 13-4 and 3-2, asserted itself inside and pulled away.

“If I see an opening, I’m going to take advantage,” Thompson said. “Teams concentrate on Rony (Seikaly) and Derrick (Coleman), and that gives me the opening.

“When we are rebounding offensively like that, we’re a hard team to beat. If we don’t make the basket, they’re going to have to foul us to stop us.”

Boston College (10-6, 2-4) was led by Dana Barros’ 16 points.

Temple 59, Penn State 44--Mark Macon scored 19 points, and Tim Perry added 13 points and 7 blocked shots as the third-ranked Owls won the Atlantic 10 Conference game at State College, Pa.
