Illinois began its search for a new football coach after charges of recruiting violations led to the resignation of Mike White.

White stepped down Monday after he was confronted by the NCAA and the university with charges of possible infractions. His resignation came four years after the NCAA placed Illinois on probation for other recruiting violations.

Illinois Athletic Director Neale Stoner said the search for a new coach would begin immediately. He mentioned no names, but former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce said in Columbus, Ohio, that he would “give anything to go to Illinois.”

Two 1979 candidates for the Illini job, Dick Jamieson and John Mackovic have been released by professional teams and told the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette they are interested, though they have not heard from Stoner.
