College Basketball : Hancock Upset by Canyons in Overtime

Five players made two free throws each in overtime to lead Canyons to a 90-87 Western State Conference win over Hancock on Thursday night at Canyons.

Guard Kevin Price, who scored five points, made the final two free throws to give Canyons a four-point lead with 48 seconds to play.

Forward Del Linzy, who finished with 12 points, scored six points in overtime.

“It was back and forth,” Canyons Coach Lee Smelser said. “It seemed like whoever brought the ball up the court last was going to win.”

Canyons guard Darrin Moloznik made a three-point shot with three seconds left in the second half to tie the score. Butch Mettinger led Canyons (13-10, 3-2 in conference play) with 24 points.

Warren Hawthorne scored 35 points to lead Hancock (18-3, 3-2).

MEN

Hawaii Hilo 64, The Master’s 57--Phil Hahn scored a game-high 23 points for Master’s in the nonconference game at Master’s.

Although Hahn made 8 of 15 shots, Master’s made only 18 of 59 shots from the field (31%). Dave Knechtel added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Master’s (7-12).

Moorpark 98, Oxnard 69--Moorpark’s bench outscored Oxnard’s, 45-15, in the Western State Conference game at Moorpark. Fred Parks led Moorpark with 18 points and Tom Neumayr added 15.

Jerry Markray came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 7 rebounds and Todd Johnson had 14 rebounds for Moorpark, which improved to 12-8 overall, 2-3 in conference play. Guard Kenny Smith led Oxnard with 24 points.

WOMEN

Azusa Pacific 70, The Masters 44--Saugus High graduate Holly Ingersoll scored a game-high 18 points for Azusa Pacific (9-5) in a nonconference game at home. It was the 200th career win for Coach Sue Hebel. Shelmarie Tatum led Master’s (8-8) with 16 points.

Moorpark 84, Oxnard 57--Karina Hardman scored 35 points and had 14 rebounds and Carol Kellick had 16 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Moorpark (13-10, 5-0 in conference play) to a Western State Conference win at Oxnard.
