Boulder Dragged on San Gabriel Track; Engine Is Derailed

Share

A Southern Pacific train engine partly derailed Sunday night in San Gabriel when it struck a large boulder deliberately dragged onto the track, authorities said. No one was injured.

A person or persons attempted to derail the entire 63-car freight train, San Gabriel Police Lt. James Goodman said, by dragging the four-foot-high boulder and pieces of pipe onto the track east of San Gabriel Boulevard. But the slow-moving train skidded to a stop and only the engine derailed, he added, “leaning over on its side.”

“We don’t know what the motive is,” Goodman said. “It’s a felony to attempt to wreck a train.”
